Okay I think the Aquaclear that I ordered comes with the carbon filters and Biomax. Can I just use the Biomax insert?

Yeah! My betta loves it and loves to swim around the stronger current xD

When I got my AquaClear, it came with 3 filter. Foam, Carbon and Biomax. Like it said, you can put whatever compatible filter you want.

Got my fancy Aqua clear filter! :) I ended up getting the 20-50 apparently fluval bought them now so its fluval 20-50. The current is a little strong but I think thats because its in a ten gallon for now but im upgrading to a 30 so it will be perfect for that!

29 gallon requires the aquaclear 30 or 50. I loved mine until I ran it dry and busted the motor and now I'm having a hard time finding one that won't grind

I found an aquaclar 70 on ebay for $15. I got it yesterday and I'm gonna keep those noodle things but but pass on the carbon due to live plans and use 2 sponges instead and then baffle the heck out if it since its going into a 20G but I have alot of snails and 2 clown plecos- they are all messy

Yeah I had to baffle it in a ten gallon tank its like current to the max my poor little axolotl.

If I do water changes can I just unplug it so that the motor doesn't get ruined?

yes:
If you unplug it and the filter is not self priming you will need to fill up the filter box with water for the suction to start, same if the tank water level falls below the lowest level of the filter box.
