Do you have a checklist? Here's what it should say.

Tank- 1.5+
Heater-5W per gallon
Filter
Food-pellets or flakes
water conditioner- eliminates Ammonia, Chlorine, Chloramine
Salts-AQ and Epsom
Gravel Vacuum
Decor

Once you have everything in your checklist, you need to set up your tank.


Tank- you should put the decor in the tank first, like substrate, and caves, fake plants, or anything else you maye have bought.


Now, on contrary to what you've hear, they are not low maintenance fish, in fact they are rather high maintenance.

Not all but most pet shop employees aren't educated on Betta fish.

They are agressive, they are pretty, and they are not immune to illnesses.


Once you have your decor set up you need fill up your tank, and add water conditioner, filter, and the heater. The heater should be set on 76-82 degrees. Betta's are tropical fish. they thrive in tropical temperatures.

Now, you acclimate your fish, add a little bit of your warm water to its cup/bag until he is acclimated.If you do not acclimate the betta may be shocked and die.

Do water changes weekly and sometimes depepnding on size, daily. 50% if you have a filtered 5+ tank. other wise, you should do 2 50% and 1 100% change weekly.
Make sure that if you haven't already you let your tank cycle.
Only tank 5+ really need to cycle. It's not a 'must' but its prefered by most.
