Too much tank?

Be careful adding tank mates, sometimes the Betta will be overly aggressive and never leave them alone which will stress the tank mates out. Cory catfish can be good tank mates as they are bottom feeders and the Betta is a labyrnth fish.

Neon Tetra are tail nippers, so I would be cautious putting them with the Betta, because he is 5 times their size and can easily kill them. If you do add tank mates make sure to give them hiding places. I don't know about snails, but I do know that Bettas can eat some shrimp depending on their size.

Bettas are perfectly happy alone though.

Neons work out great for most people and they are only fin nippers in small groups. A Betta averages body wise about 1.5 inches and a Neon Tetra one inch. A king would be 3 or 4 times larger.

Another thing you can do is only fill it up halfway. With all those plants in there, he'll have lots of space to hide and move around, but he won't have to go very far to the top to get air. Many people do that with larger tanks. It's true that their natural habitat is shallow, but it's also long - the same thing that would happen if you only fill your tank halfway. You would have a nice amount of length, but it would be shallow.
Awesome gift by the way. I had to buy myself a tank for an early Christmas present for my new male that arrived 2 weeks ago via the post office - he's in a 3 gallon, my female is in a 5 gallon.

I wasn't saying they would, just simply suggesting another alternative. A friend of mine did that with her 40 gallon and not only did the Betta seem to love it, but my friend said it was a lot easier to clean.

If you'd rather fill it all the way full, it's best to have a lot of tall plants that either reach the surface or get very close. They like to swim and sleep near the surface, but it shouldn't stop them from exploring the whole tank. Just make sure you don't completely cover the water surface, because then they will drown.
