He's nice. The spikes are his rays and no he won't loose them. Member "Mo" may have some salamander HMPK females for sale but I think they carry the dumbo gene.

His spikes could be genes or from power growth, Power growth is were they're forced grow while in there growth spurt while young by feeding them lots of food protein to make them grow faster than normal, Bad thing is it shortens there life span causing it's body to think is grow grow grow till it's body collapse, it's body may grow faster but it's organs are taking the beating

I'm curious, when is a betta's growth spurt? I'm going to guess in the first few months. The pics I posted are pretty deceiving as Napoleon is actually pretty small in length.

Growth spurts starts when they are juveniles 2-3months? It varies on how big your grow out tank is and culling is most important too so more space to grow for your fry's
