Betta (and fish!) newbie

Hi. My name is Robbin and I have my first Betta. His name is Alpha and he's a blue veil tail. I have dogs so I know better (about preparing for a new arrival before bringing them home!) but we were in the local fish store to get my setup stuff and there was a row of those nasty little betta bowls and he jumped out of the water when I walked by. How could I resist?!?!?

So I "rescued" him and brought him home and put him in a 1/2 gallon mason jar while I set up the new 2.5 gallon tank and accoutrements and started reading like crazy!

He seemed quite happy and immediately set up a bubble nest in the corner. Bill (SO) was surprised he was so active since he'd only seen bettas in the little bowls and never had a betta (though he's had a good number of other community-type fish). Bill also finds me quite amusing as I interact with my fish daily and he's happy that I'm so happy with little Alpha!

Then after a week or so, I noticed the dreaded white spots on Alpha. Story to be continued on Betta Fish Diseases and Emergencies (don't worry, a happy ending so far!)

Hello, my first betta was a red veiltail called Ferarri that was many years back now but thats what started my betta addiction.

Me too. Carter is my furst Betta since I was like young. The one my sister got lived a month. Mine is 2.5 years my first two lived a month and my fourth and fifth lived a few months.

Hi Choclate Betta and nataliey. Yes, there is a heater in the 2.5gal tank. And yes, I can see how bettas are addicting! Alpha is almost like a tiny puppy (that you don't have to take out at 2am! LOL) and much more interactive than the other fish in the big tank.

Will see if I can get the pic uploaded as my avatar. Right now the only one I have on this computer is the first I took in his 1/2gal mason jar

hehehe, I had to take the backing off the tank because it was making a reflection and poor Alpha felt the need to defend his bubble nest every time he turned around! (reminded me of "Flo" in Finding Nemo

I used to think the same thing! My bettas hardly flare anymore and usually just beg for food if anything... Anyways, welcome to the forum!
