I have heard so many great things about this filter, but is it gentle enough for a betta when the flow is turned down all the way? And also if there is a lot of sponge in the media box? Thanks.
I have the AquaClear 30 in my sorority tank, I'm quite happy with it. It's quiet, and as you know adjustable. It's a 3 step filter. Mechanical, Biological, and Chemical based. It's really just sponge, bio-bag, and carbon bags. There seems to be a lot of surface area, which is great. My females don't have long fins, but they like being near the intake. I think the 20 will be gentle enough for your male. Sorry, I only have 1 male with a sponge filter.
I have the Aqua Clear 20, but even with the flow turned all the way down I still had to baffle it for my betta. Though, I think for most people, the Aqua Clear 20 is generally fine as is.
As for the sponge, like Lebron said, it comes with a bio bag, a sponge and carbon bag. From what I understand, you can pick and choose what you want so if you're not a fan of the biobag, you can choose two sponges and a carbon bag instead.
I have an aquaclear 70 and it is to strong for the goldfish. So what I did was i took a block of Aquaclear sponge and stuck it at the outflow. I'm assuming this would also work for the smaller versions as well. You may have to adjust it a bit to get it to fit but it works nicely
It sounds like it is too strong without a special baffle. On a lot of pages online it says that the flow can be turned down to a third of the full flow. Is this the same for all adjustable HOB filters or does it differ? Like do you know of any that go down to half?
