What type of tail is this?

If he has a tail biting problem, that could mean he could bite the female a bit more. If you look to breed, breed double tails or halfmoons. Veiltail a are used as animals that give other fish longer tails. Most people would not want to buy veils. Also when you present them with a picture of the father while in the breeding tank, it will make him look undisierable with his bad tail.

Thanks, I'll be quite careful when breeding them then.

I'm not looking to sell the bettas, so that's why I don't mind that they are veil tails.

well, if you breed, you're going to have 50-300 bettas from a successful spawn, so unless you can house that many as a "personal stash" or know 50-300 people who would love to have one you're gonna have to sell some, and VT's are just a really hard sell unless they have a truly unheard-of coloration (like this guy: http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/aucti...asvt1355082383)

I think for a first time try at breeding he may be okay, but if he's got a tail biting problem that usually means there is some deep seeded anger issues he may have and he might become very vicious towards a female. He's also a VT, which unfortunately most people are not buying or interested in. Unless you have friends and family who want to take in a few Bettas from you (if successful you may have a few hundred on your hands), you may have some issues trying to find his offspring a good home.

Ok, so after comparing to my fishies I've come to the conclusion.... he is a VT, not a CT. He either has a tail biting issue or finrot.

Yes, he's not at all a CT, he doesn't even quite have the same body shape as one. VT all the way.

He's a veiltail

Tailbiting does not mean the fish has some deep seeded anger issues, it does not mean he will be more aggressive toward a female in the spawning tank. Bettas generally tail bite for 1 of 3 reasons, they are stressed out, they are bored or they feel that their fins are too heavy and want to "lighten their load"

If you want to get breeding experience and have the space and time to care for potentially 300 babies then go for it!

try breeding. if you feel that you have no problems culling, do it right away and only keep a few. do you have other fish you can feed the fry to? like goldfish or cichlids? please don't think i'm a monster for suggesting this. i have never personally done this. lots of serious breeders cull. best not to waste the protein then,right?
