Weird Pic..

Caught this shot while taking some pics of one of my bettas Gunnar...

This part of their "breathing" processes? lol

Hmm.. it looks as if his lips/mouth is stuck together and that is a cut right above his mouth o.O May just be my imagination or the angle.

They do use spit to build bubble nests, it could be a build up of spit in his mouth, possibly had blown a couple bubbles right before you took the picture.

My male has that too, but his doesn't seem as pronounced as yours, it does open and close though. I think it's just a genetic thing, probably a result of too much inbreeding.

their jaws are designed to spring outward slightly when they bite. the mechanism works kinda like one of those scissor-action grabbers: the mandibles are pushed forward, creating a small area of suction to pull water (and food) into his mouth, kinda like a turkey baster or syringe. what you're seeing is his jaws partially extended, the translucent part is the stretched membrane connecting his skull to his jawbones.

I wasnt all that alarmed by it because I knew he wasnt injured or anything.. just found it interesting and wondered of the "use" of this part of his body.
