Unhappy slits in fin

slits in my betta's fin are severe, so here is how it happens: i do water changes one night, then the next morning, my betta has slits in his bottom fin, in between bones. then, shortly after, what comes next? fin rot. i just don't get it. help!

How often do you do water changes? What size tank? Heated? Filtered? Tank mates?

are you using tap water with no conditioner? Ripped fins are usually a sign of poor water quality. Or maybe he's just flaring too profusely. It's happened before. You can take a cup of your tank water to petco and they will test it for you.

yes, i use water conditioner and 1 time weekly, 2 gal tank, no tank mates or heater, but an air stone and filter :)

well, he came home with problems and he has had fin rot and it has not come back. 2 gal, 50%.
