Goldies will love you for sand. They are natural bottom feeders and sift through it. Mine will take mouthfuls, swim up to the top and spit it out. :p

I did an organic potting soil search on home depot. Would this work for my soil? http://m.homedepot.com/p/40-lb-Top-S...077/100348865/

I've thought about sand and i like it becuase its more natural than most gravel but how could you get old food and poop out without sucking up the sand? Obviously not a gravel vacum.
