Yes, bettas can, do, and will jump so its a good idea to have some kind of lid. I would go ahead and put them in together divided if the bowl is unheated (the lamp doesn't count.....lamps heat unevenly and unreliably, they can easily over-heat a bowl. And when you need it the most at night you can't leave it on anyway)anyway though. Its fine for now to do that so long as you keep up with your water changes(I would recommend 2 50-60%s and 1 100% at least per week), you'll just want to upgrade/get a separate setup within the next couple of months at the most. :)

Until you can get craft mesh maybe just put a piece of cardboard over the top of the bowl. If anything it will deter him from jumping.

And I tryed to put something over his bowl, but he wouldn't get enough oxygen. For now, I lowered his water about 2 inches.

Just poke holes in the object you're using. Should work fine. You can also use the clear plastic wrap.

I put the divider that came with the 2.5 gallon tank over the bowl. Plenty of air, but the holes are just to small for him to jump through. For my B-day, I'm asking for a tank with a lid...maybe the same one that FH is in so that I can see him better. It is so hard to see him in a bowl...
