"Standing Thermometer"??

How embarrassing... what a dummy I am!!!!!!!!!!!!
Those strip thermometers are a waste, so I grabbed what I thought was a good glass type. When I got it home, I noticed that it says "standing thermometer" and nothing else.... what in blue blazes is a "standing thermometer"????
It's simply a glass tube w/a red rubber bottom. I know what a wise-guy would say, but in terms of fish tanks, what do I do with it??? If I drop it into a tank, won't it just float away?

Nope, it's weighted at the bottom so it won't float - the pink part covers up little silver beads that weigh it down. It "stands" because the top part is filled with air while the bottom weights keep it in the substrate
