My aunt was over tonight and she has a gorgeous blue Betta. In a vase. With a plant in the top -_- I keep mine in a heated and filtered 10g with tankmates and she always scowls and says "My little Mr. Blue doesn't need all that fancy stuff! He thrives how he is!" and it takes all of my self control to not scream at her. I mean, Bettas aren't herbivores, they can't just eat the bottom of the plant all the time and be as healthy as can be! She was saying tonight that he was looking sickly and losing colour and I almost yelled "WELL DUH!" Urg, sorry for the rant. I'm sure that there are plenty of people out there who are actually capable of keeping a Betta like that and having him or her thrive and live a long healthy life! But not my aunt. Not her at all.

Point her to this forum. My experience with most adults is that they're just ignorant and once they get it they feel bad and really want to do well with them. My experience with kids is they always feel bad and want to do right.. Adults need their egos broken every now and again.

Sometimes people just truly dont know...i once had the vase I got as a gift and the .5 keepers...I just didnt know any better. All the torture..poor things..but now I know! And I do the best I can to provide great homes for my bettas. Education is key and sites like this are soooo helpful.
