I say beta instead of betta because of my speech and the dialect of the area I live in. Personally, I can't distinctly say d and t so "Thirty" and "Dirty" sound identical. So if I pronounce Beta as Betta it will sound like "Bedda" which is how "Better" is said in my area.

In short, I misspeak to be understood. :P

totally understandable. it really doesn't matter how people say it. it was just the attitude, that sometimes comes along with how they say it. weird looks etc. some people just say it because everyone around them always said beta. and i'm not out to point a finger, and say that they are wrong, or give anyone grief about their dialect. this is about attitudes and rudeness and interacting with a stranger you just met. the whole pronunciation was more of a catalyst, than anything.snowysurface, i'm from mn, and here when we say things like the word coat, for instance, it sounds more like coooooooooooooooat. now that's a long o sound. the asian college students i drive taxi for , laugh their butts off over this. they tell me we have the longest o's in the world. lol.
