it really varies, you could end up with over 300 eggs, or only 15 that survive. some male betta even turn out to be egg eaters, though i dont think its commen. You dont need to let the fry die because you dont have enough room, you can remove the female before the male embrases her enough times to drop them all, and put her back in her tank where she will either drop or reabosrbe them, no harm done and no killing of the fry.

You can also remove eggs from the nest immediately after they have spawned, before the eggs become embryos and hatch into live fry.This can be done when you remove the female. You have to do it in such a way as to not disturb the nest any more than necessary.
