Rescue betta, fin fell off

So I rescued this little guy with the intention of giving it to my sister once it healed (since i can no longer house another one). Part of his caudal fin actually fell off into the cup that i bought it. I dont know what could have caused this since i could saw the part that fell off in the cup. He's a beautiful feathertail (unfortunately) salamander (I think). I got him from petsmart

He also has a minor case of velvet. How long do you think his fin will grow back?

I'm not sure he has velvet. I think his belly is gray from stress and he may have some normal gold coloring on his face. Can you show a photo that shows what you are calling velvet?

Ammonia burns or bad fin rot caused that

What size tank is he in? Conditioner? Temp? Are you treating with anything?

Hi,

I bought him a 2.5 gallons. Not much, I know but thats all my room could afford at the moment. My heater that I ordered online will be here monday. But my room is currently at 80* (i will suffer in this heat for them haha).

Prime conditioner. Not treating with anything yet.

He was spasming around the tank so I shined some flashlight on it. Not visible otherwise, cant seem to get a good pic either.

It depends but usually they grow back pretty quick. If you have stress coat, use 2X the regular dosage amount to help promote the growth (directions on the bottle).

It was indeed velvet. I tried to cure it by salt and clean water for the past 3 days (1tsp every gallon) but the little guy didnt make it. He passed away this morning and all the goldust became much more apparent than it did when i first bought him. First betta that died on me that is not because of old age since junior year in HS, now I am a sophomore in college :(

So for his tank, can i just soak it in hot water and a lot a lot of aquarium salt + fungus medicine? Would that kill the bacteria?

You could clean it with 1 part bleach/5 parts water. And rinse until all residue is gone.

Let it air dry for a few days and before you use it again clean it with a bit of bleach.
