I guess my main concern is that he was sick or something...

if its something as simple as being startled by the light its an easy fix :)
Oh, my Fred does the "food jiggle" in the morning and evening feeding time. Up and down the side seam of the AQ. He stops after I'm done feeding. He can count, too because he stops after 2 pellets and swims elsewhere. Very strategic and pragmatic fish personality.

yeah maybe it is a feeding thing now that you say it!
in the morning and and some evenings... he does laps back and forth looking at me... but because his tank is small (upgrading him this weekend) he gets some speed and then its like he has to slam his breaks on... hes crazy!

More info would be helpful: http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=49233

Photos of your fish and a video of the crazy swimming might also help.

Ok so I got him to flare last night for a bit of stimulation and I noticed that the way he swims when he's flaring is how he swims when he sees me except without the flaring gills and less intense.
Maybe he's angry at me!
Or he sees his shadow?
