ok so i test the water straight out the tap and the nitrates are 30!! so no amount of water changes are ever going to bring that down.. what can i do about this high level of nitrate?

The EPA regulates the amount of nitrates in drinking water.The maximum limit is 10. Report it. Your city is breaking federal law if this is true.

Prime water conditioner will detox nitrate for 48 hours, its 2 drops per gallon but you can 5 times that amount for a level that high.

iam in the United Kingdom though, I dont know if that is the law here or not.

We have so much high levels of limescale here, it gets on everything so quickly.. poor fishes.. and my poor washing machine.. even the draining board by the sink needs to be cleaned every day as it has limescale coating on it..

Wow according to that report they allow 50mg/l in nitrates.. that's really scary. There are lots of reports much lower making people sick. I wouldn't drink it, and I'd use prime in your tank to remove it. The report referenced the need to address nitrate levels though.

yes I think I am going to report this to the water board.. and i'll have to find some of that prime.. Ive seen it in some stores but not all and i cant remember where i saw it.. lol

I did have a look at him/she lol it seems to be bloated, prob explains why it wont eat..

As for the sex of this fish i though females have that egg spot area under their bellies, which this fish does have.. my female crowntail has the same.

she is a female she is just a big lady! lol

He really is most definitely a bloated male. You can tell by the length of fins. Females just don't have fins like that. Even if it was a female, that's way beyond eggy.
