Sponge and HOB Filter

I've been cycling a new tank and started with a HOB Whispter PF10 filter. After realizing that the flow would be pretty punishing for my betta, I also muffled it and it works fine. I've been looking at the sponge filter and ended up getting one on a whim and decided to add it to my tank. Now I was thinking, should I just remove the HOB filter and rely on my sponge filter (which I now prefer), or should I keep both of them in there or.. are there any pros or cons to having both? Also, its still cycling (fishless cycling). Would having two filters in right now slow down the cycling process?

Generally, when switching filters, you have to run the new one for a month with the old one in it or you'll completely restart your cycle. That's how long it takes to reseed media fully. Since it's a new setup (how old) it may just be best to replace it.

What size tank do you have and what sponge filter and pump did you buy?

Many keepers like to run both types. Sponge filters for lots of area for the bacteria colony and HOB for particle filtration. If you will be lightly stocked and changing water 50% weekly, the second is less important.

Having both filters in there spreads your bacteria colony between them (and the substrate). Your fishless cycle produces an overabundance of bacteria anyway. Go with the one you like best.
