I have adjustable 50W heaters in my 3.9 gallon tanks (it's all they had at the shop nearby when I had to run out and get them in an emergency) and they've been very reliable, no swings in temperature and heat to exactly the temp I set it to. You'll be fine if you keep an eye on it when first using it and it doesn't do anything funky.

Does 48 hours sound like a good amount of time for a test run?

That should be fine for a test run, but maybe just keep an eye on it for a little while after that, just to be sure.

Thank you guys! I have come to the conclusion that I can get a 50w heater and keep it in a 3 gallon tank as long as it's a high quality brand and I'm sure it works well before I use it for fish.
