Sparkling gouramis would be my pick. They are only a very small fish, and not too delicate to work with. I found my sparkling gourami could be quite territorial though, but if you had a heavily planted tank a pair or trio should be fine.
They also had a lot of personality, and being air breathers like bettas they don't require a filter.
