The face patch may take a while to heal.. think chemical burn.. but as long as he's improving I wouldn't worry. I'd continue treatment for 2 weeks and reevaluate. I imagine at that time he can be weaned off epsom salts.

So some annoying news.
Since I have taken the log cave out he has been doing great, the water has been crystal clear and smell free. Plus his red patch is almost completely gone.
About two days ago I finally got him a different cave, one of those alligator skulls from Walmart. I have seen many people with this skull so I thought it would be a safe bet...
Since the skull has been in there the tank is again cloudy and smells of gasoline! Vespasian is not acting sick and still swims around and eats. Is it the cave again? I mean it has to be but it is just hard to accept because this is the second time witha different cave. I have owned many tanks in the past and this is the first time this stuff has happened to me.
Do I need to remove and return the skull? Should I just stick to plants with him from now on?

Try presoaking anything for a few days to make sure it's not giving off anything nasty..

I know you can use something by underwater galleries safely.
