I have no self control! D:

I went to Petsmart today, planning on buying only a 25 watt heater for my betta, Patriot, and maybe a ghost shrimp to help keep the tank all clean and shiny. The heater he had before wasn't doing its job well enough, so I bought an adjustable one.

Well, while I was there... I wandered down the forbidden aisle. I saw the cutest little females in the aisle, and they were just the most adorable little things. They were all wiggly and excited to see me when I put my finger up to the glass.

Since I found a LFS, I've vowed to never buy another betta from Petsmart, as they just look neglected and unhealthy. At least, in ours. None of their females look healthy. :( I'd get one to save her, but I'd really rather support the LFS I found. Their employees are great and they take wonderful care of their fish. That's where I got my Pat. :)

Anyway, the little females were so tempting, I went to the tank aisle and found a 3 gallon critter keeper for $15 and 4 pounds of multi colored gravel for $3. I figured, hey. I already have a heater at home that should definitely do a good job in a smaller tank, so why not?

So, I walked out with my new heater for Patriot, two ghost shrimp, the critter keeper, and gravel. I'll be going to the LFS tomorrow to pick out a girl. :) I'm so excited. I'm going to get her a castle and a fake plant or two.

I have a question, though... How would I go about lighting this tank? It's kinda dark, and I don't want her to feel like she's living in a cave. :( Do you think a desk lamp like this would light it up without being able to see all the lines from the grates?

lol I feel your pain on the self control issue. When the betta bug hits, it hits hard

That light should be fine - I use basically the same type of lamp for my hospital tank. Put the right bulb in it and you could even do live plants, should you so choose. If you put the light at the right angle, I don't think you could see the slats, but if never used a kritter keeper so I can't say for sure.

that light would definitely do the job.
I keep a few of mine in critter keepers too and the top of it really doesnt obstruct much light. I have mine under a regular desk lamp like that too.
I do suggest switching from regular incandescent bulbs over to CFL so that you will be set if you ever want to grow plants!

This was $13 @ Pet Supplies Plus. It's advertised as a heater and light (it's just an incandescent bulb in there).

If you have the same brand KK as I do, there's little slots in the viewing window portion of the lid, this has little things that pop into there to hold it on. And you can still open the kk the normal way with it.

I don't know if we have the same brand KK, but if we do, that's awesome. :) I'll definitely look for that light while I'm out today. Hopefully my LFS will have it.

check the viewing window, if it has a notch on the left and on the right side of the clear part of the lid, it's compatible.

EDIT:
Ours is Lee's brand
