His rays were always red.. I don't see rot.

I would get a prefilter sponge: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_no...efilter+sponge

You sound like a super helpful RA for looking after your residents fish! :)
I'm lucky if I can get my roommate to remember feeding mine on the weekends while I'm gone. Sometimes she doesn't even turn their lights off. :P
Thank you :) I true to help animals as much as I can!

And sponge filters are great :)

Not at all, if it was there would most likely be cloudy white things and also it wouldn't happen over night, those are his natural color and he wouldn't be bleeding like that

As for the filter, I am not completely sure but I have heard like you, that you can rinse the filter in tank water. I have heard people put some tank water in a bucket and rinsing the filter in the bucket so everything doesn't get cycled on the filter again and that the filter isn't replaced until its falling apart. Please do not quote me on this because it is only hear-say. How about starting up a new thread post about it. I am actually curious to know this answer too.
Yeah I know it's not rot and he should be fine since his tank is kept clean.

But that is a good question to ask! I have heard the exact same thing you said but I'll post something soon to make sure before I do anything

You don't have to wait. You can just stick it on the end at any time.

I have to wait for the sponge filter to cycle, I don't have any that are except for the one in my 5 gallon.
