Yeah I would stop him. If you put him on the bed & he heads toward the nightstand block him by putting your hand in front of him. You may have to do this umpteen times to get him to stop but keep blocking him even if it takes 30 minutes for him to get the idea. My little rescue would periodically lay on the floor & watch two of my males but she didn't obsess.
