I just put my VT betta, Pilly-Willy, in his new tank about a week ago and he seemed very happy once I sorted out some filter issues. He usually blows bubbles but today when I got up he had built a nest.
I was just wondering if bettas try to protect their nests even if they have no eggs. I have two apple snails in the tank as well and they are quite small at the moment, and he is curious about them and inspects them and then moves on.
Today however, the two snails were under the nest and when one rolled over and exposed his fleshy part Pilly Willy attacked him and kept on attacking until the snail hid in it's shell again. I have removed the two snails for now and will reintroduce them when they are a bit bigger.
Also he bit me aggressively about a minute later, usually he nibbles me because he expects that food is coming but he darted for me like he did with the snail and it was a hard bite.
Is he just having a bad day or was he trying to protect his nest. He has never built a full nest before and I would like to know for future so I don't disturb him too much when he is moody ^_^
