2 gallons is also minimum. In this you can use a 25W heater. Even in this you need twice weekly water changes of 50% and 100%

In this 1g you should do 50% and 100% every day, alternating while he is healing. Water must be same temp - use in tank thermometer and water must be premixed with conditioner before doing water changes.

76-82 is the range but 78-80 is ideal.

I'm sorry but you can't keep him healthy in this current setup.

Also how did you acclimate your betta to new water?

Well I balanced his bowl in the water for about 10 mins, but my arm got tired so then I scooped him up out using a fishnet and put him in the water.
The only reason I got my fish was because I was given the fishtank, but now that I have him I want to take as good of care of him as I can though I'll probably just keep the tank.

You very likely shocked him. He should have gotten a minimum of 30 minutes float, along with several 50% changes with the new tank water in the cup over this time. But ideally an hour soak, and adding a couple tablespoons of new water every 10 minutes.

So this might account for the heavy breathing issues.

Don't know what else to suggest.. just reiterate what I said above about needing clean warm water.
