I just got the API Master test kit. It also includes tests for ph and high ph, but the three tests alone (ammonia, nitrite and nitrate) were the same price as the master kit so might as well.

I don't think you are doing anything wrong per se. A lot of times with these Long fin males-the water movement and the use of the long delicate fin to swim can cause the fin to tatter and it can cause neurotic behaviors-like tail biting, glass surfing...etc....Once the fins tatter-it opens them up for a secondary infection and then along with excess stress can make it harder for them to heal.

I don't want to discourage you regarding the master freshwater test kit-but as long as you make regular water changes, don't overfeed, feed quality foods......You shouldn't have water quality problems-Also, you almost always will do the same thing with any abnormal test result-Water change...But it is a good idea to understand your source water, tank water, interaction of additives...etc.....By using a liquid test kit....or test strips....
