There are just so many bettas I want at LFS, and they are in such sorry shape, so I'm reaaaallllly wanting to get this done. I have room for the 6.5 gallon bookshelf tank from Petco, and I have some extra filters and substrate. I'd need some plants (buying some more for my 20G anyway, I could break them up). My question is how to I divide it? Would it be a bad idea? I'd use the plants to block line of sight as much as possible, and also would get a heater.

Thanks!

Also, I'd QT them and heal them up before adding them all.

we've got a bookshelf tank in a 3-compartment divide, using the mesh-ans-report-covers method. it's substrated with a mix of sand, gravel and tumbled river rocks, which means the substrate actually holds the dividers VERY firmly in place all by itself. the included filter with the tank is in the left compartment, and there are two 7.5 watt pad heaters, one on each end.
