because people breeding for show are usually only interested in a tail type that can achieve a 180 degree spread, and they don't have the mass-market petstore appeal of VT's, so they get overlooked both by show breeders and pet breeders.

Many young veiltails will appear as "spade tails" Before their fins finish growing out.
