Here is what i plan on doing, on sunday when i get off work I am going to go to petco/walmart and buy the following supplies:
  • 5.5 gallon Marineland Hex 5
  • 50 Wat heater
  • Sponge Filter
  • gravel
  • Ornaments, and fake plants (I had bad luck with live plants in the past) are there any good live plants for beginners?
  • Hakari gold Betta pellets, the ones i have expire in April (any suggestions for other food)
I have water conditioner(Jungle, Start Right), Aquarium salt, and a test kit.

Question: should i establish the tank before i get a beta, or will it be ok to bring one home with me on sunday?

Thank you for all of the help, and patience. I tend to ask a lot of questions.

You can get the tank set-up and the water wormed up and conditioned beforehand, you do no need the salt unless your fish get finrot or something like that, as for the plants you cna get one of those moss balls or a java fern, or java moss, all are easy to take care of and require very little light

Hakari is alright. You might want to consider omega-one instead. Water sprite and java fern are easy plants to grow. If you find the right fish you have to make yours, get him. Just leave him in the cup till you get everything set up, then once the water is up to temp float his cup for at least 30 minutes before releasing him. Get a test kit and check ammonia daily. When it rises do a water change till the tank cycles.

the petco i went to did not have any hex tanks, the only ones they had were 2 gallon. They did have a aqueon evolve 4(I ended up buying it), I also bought a Java Fern, a 50 Wat heater, gravel, and some fake plants. Surprisingly the tank only took 3 gallons of water, which is fine with me.

I saw the coolest Delta Tail while i was there, needless to say little "Delta" now has a permanent home, and a tank waiting to be swam in.

Sounds great. Be careful if the plants are plastic instead of silk. Plastic can rip fins.
