Aquarium Size and Depth

I have typically kept my bettas in 5 gallon tanks. Last year I used my 40 gallon breeder tank for a new betta and he lasted a few days before he died. The tank was set up correctly and it was 95% full of water. Is that too much? I would assume not..but that was my only experience putting a betta in a large tank. It has been a long time but I often wonder what happened. He appeared fine but maybe he wasn't.

Its hard to say, I have 11 females currently in a 46g bow front which is taller than it is deep.

A new betta may have already been sick/stressed before being added to the large tank... I doubt the tank itself was the cause.

Yep, highly unlikely that the tank was the problem. Unless the tank itself is toxic in some way, it is impossible for a betta to die simply by virtue of being in it.

I kept my females in a 16 gal that is 4 inches taller than it is wide.

I should have also added that my bettas are all in 10g tanks.. I have a 55 community tank and I think that a betta would do just fine in there too, except I doubt they'd get along with my angels ;)
