Your lucky all she did was shred his fins!
Last week I had a female HMPK kill one of my male HMPKs.
Everything was cool, except she was mostly interested with the activity ouside the tank then inside.
She showed all the signs of being ready,so I covered the front of the tank with a towel.
Checked the progress the next day after work and he was ripped to pieces and floating by the cup!!!

Oh wow. YIKES! I hope that doesn't happen to me soon. I just want to get off a successful spawn. D:

I'm waiting for my white grizzle boy to come in so I can start on that line instead, while my copper boy heals up.

Wow HK! I'm so sorry that happened! I can't imagine what would have changed her temperment so suddenly and drastically! In the past I have had both males and females display this type behavior, but never followed such docile and amicable behavior. Maybe she is a little bi-polar? lol I know, not funny when your boy is so hurt. Good luck with you next try. I'd sure keep an eye on that one. He may never give her a chance again giving what she did this time.

Yea I don't think I'm going to breed this pair. I'm not thinking that their personalities would make it work too well.

She may not of been fully ready.. if not ready then aggression can and often does kick in. He may of made some form of aggressive move towards her and she stood her ground, etc.

Just give them some settling down time, recondition them and try again before you give up fully on her. Another female I have is very aggressive.. I tried her 5-6 times before I gave in and retired her. But if you love her, don't give up on her yet :)

It's a love/hate relationship. I may try when he gets his fins back. Seeing as how large of a spread he had, she did some serious damage. She had some seriously dark bars, so I wouldn't see why she'd do it. When watching them, he seemed like quite the wussy. I was hoping he'd make a move but he was just a big cuddler.

Those kind of females usually need extra aggressive males. Gentle cuddlers will often be attack, specially if he won't embrace when she wants to.

That's what I was thinking. Hopefully I'll get an aggressive male, but if I don't then I'll just have to not breed her until I get one in one of my fry.
