Snails?

Heading to Petco today, in addition to some red cherry shrimp I was considering a snail. However, last time I went to Petco, the guy told me that if the snail dies and I don't realize it, it could quickly pollute the environment and kill my bettas as harmful toxins are released during decomp. Has anyone had experience like this? The last thing I want is to take an unnecessary risk.

Thanks! =]

Honestly I think it'll be fine if you watch it. If it doesn't move for a while you can take it out and smell it (dead smell stinks to high heaven). I don't think worrying about it dying is any reason not to try.
