What kind of bucket is safe to prepare water for water changes?

I went to the store today to buy two buckets, one for siphoning water out and one for preparing the replacement water, but when I found them, I smelled the inside and they had a nasty chemical smell in them.

Is there a certain type of plastic I should look for? Because I can't imagine that would be safe for the water.

I use 2, 5 gallon buckets from walmart in the hardware section. Make sure it's heavy duty as water weight can cause a messy spill when the cheap flimsy buckets with the weak handles can give way at any time.

Plastic is plastic, just make sure the buckets are rinsed properly and only used for aquarium water changes.

For dirty water that never goes anywhere except the garden I use an old costco soap bucket. For clean water I use a 3 gallon from walmart's cleaning aisle. The 5 gallon buckets are too heavy for me to lift and pour in new water.

any brand new mop bucket is suitable for both tasks. I went to Canadian tire and purchased two new 3 gallon mop buckets and rinsed them really well with hot hot water. one is for dirty water one is for clean water.

Same as most above, I bought my buckets in the cleaning aisle of Target.
