My betta spits out his food

I had just recently gotten a betta & he is just now starting to really eat & well I have the flakes, pellets & dryed shrimp & he will eat the tinny pieces sometimes, but when he gets a big flake he chews it up & spits it out? He dont like the pellets he spits them out as well same with the shrimp. So I was just wondering if this is normal with a new fish or do i need to start making sure everything is really small?

I think it's because the pieces are too big for him to eat. Try breaking them up into smaller pieces. The pellets can be crushed. The flakes and shrimp can be broken into smaller pieces, too.

I agree with dramaqueen. They usually spit out pellets to soften them. Good luck :D
