Let me just say, a control valve is needed without question. Four of my five fish are in tanks with sponge filters and no problems to report. Most still build bubble nests on occasion. Bubble nests are not a health sign in bettas, just a part of the reproductive cycle.
As far as smells, if you are getting a bad smell that fast I would consider it a water quality issue. I have never had an odor problem in any tank with a sponge filter.
