And I will add that he was vibrant and healthy looking when I bought him. He was very active (almost to the point I would describe as agitated).

No, I don't. I can make it to Walmart tonight, I guess I'll either be getting something to cure him or a new betta :C

and looking at his rays....I'm guessing it has something to do with the water, instead of "regular" disease, probably..fungus, u have malachite green?

Does anyone know how I can avoid this in the future? I rinsed everything well, didn't put anything weird in the tank, and I've already cleaned it in the few days I've had it. Did I just buy a sick fish? As I recall, some of the fish I was looking at were in a blue solution, and some were in regular water, and he may have been in the blue (which I've head may be used for medication?). Could that have been a sign?

get acriflavine if available, follow the instruction/dosage, if it's dosage say ...per gallon, then get a gallon of water, boiled if possible, let it cool, mix it with the acriflavine according to it's dosage, let your fish stay there for like an hour or so. Do it like 2-3 times a day, using new "water+acriflavine" mix. If acriflavine not available, then probably anything with "malachite green" contents. You probably should not put him back to the tank for now, maybe a temporary home will be better.

It IS also possible that he's probably already sick before you bought him, and either way, I think it's better to clean the whole tank and refill with new fresh water + water conditioner if u have it. Maybe, rearrange stuffs like..not putting the live plants right beside his tank?
