Wow... you went from over 5ppm nitrites to well over 40 ppm nitrates in the course of a day?

To be honest I wasn't checking nitrates this morning. I was only checking nitrites. Tonight was the first time I checked nitrates. I'm just hoping I don't have another 4+ ppm nitrite spike in the am

make sure you did the shaking for the nitrate test correctly
10 drop Bottle 1, shake Bottle 2 for 30 sec, add 10 drops into vial, shake 1 min. read results in 5 minutes

Actually you are to invert the test tube a few times after adding bottle number 1

Those are really high levels.

You might want to think about moving your fish to a smaller quarantine tank until your bigger tank settles itself out. I'd even think about finishing off the cycle fish-less.

On the smaller tank, it would be much easier to change the water and you wouldn't have to retest multiple times a day like you're probably doing now.

Oh yes forgot about mentioning that.

Revised version:
Make sure you shake the bottles correctly for nitrate test:
10 drops bottle 1, gently move bottle 1 up and down to mix the solution, shake bottle 2 vigorously for 30 sec, add 10 drops from bottle 2 into vial, shake the vial vigorously for 1 minute, see results after 5 mins.

Shake vigorously as if trying to create bubbles inside the bottle. I am getting more "defined" biceps from doing this since Jan.

Do you have a fish in there? I'd be surprised it is not showing symptoms of stress or poisoning if you have one in their.

He shows no signs of stress. As soon as I get home from the airport I will put him in a qt. What do I do to continue the tank cycle??
