I think 78-80 is what is reccommended.

well, i got the heater that doesn't have controls on it bc the tank is only 3 gallons.... i have to say, i was wary at first but i absolutely love it!! when i don't have the light on the water stays between 79-80 and when i have the light on for a couple of hours it gets 80-81... it's very constant in the temp it heats the water to! he's a happy lil guy!

Even if you have the light on for awhile, the temp should be ok at 80-81. I'd like to have a heater for my 1 and a half gallon acrylic but don't think it would be safe.
