What's the deal with my Ph. ?

I just started testing my water recently. Straight untreated tap water Ph. is 8.0
After being in the tank for a week it reads 6.0
After a 50% wc I got 7.4
Should the Ph drop like that? I'm wanting to do a fish-in cycle soon. How will Ph affect the cycle process?
It's a 5.5gal. Top-Fin glass tank with four silk plants, top fin polished pebbles gravel, and a top fin small bridge decoration that the tag said was made of concrete.
I'm using the API master test kit. The one with the liquid drops and test tubes.

I would make sure you are doing the tests properly, that being said something wonky is going on, I would take some samples to your LFS or petco or what ever and have them test it once a week for a few weeks in a row, we are lucky here we have a really good LFS that gives you a big paper with all the results on it so you can compare them over time

I've been shaking the bottles before adding the drops. But the instructions don't say to do so. They only mention shaking the nitrate test bottles. Could this affect the test?

What's currently in your tank? Plants? Driftwood? Type of substrate? It can happen to have a drop like that, its not the norm but it does happen for some folks. Put some tap water in a glass, stir it occasionally over a 24 hr period & then do your tests. This is supposed to be your true Ph, after the water has gassed off. A Ph that low will hinder cycling.

Are you shaking the bottle or shaking the tubes? The tubes should be inverted multiple times to ensure the solution mixes properly, this can have a direct affect on your test results.

There may also be something going on at your local waterworks, might be worth seeing if they have a website and check for news.

Shellieca, should I add water conditioner also? I only did a base test with untreated tap water. Never did one with the conditioner except when it was already in the tank.

Shaking the bottles before adding the drops. I do invert the test tubes several times for the Ph test as per the instructions. The instructions don't mention shaking the bottles though.

I'm not sure as though shaking the bottles would make any difference, really, but your water conditioner might. Some of them have interesting additives in them so it may be worth doing three tests: one straight out of the tap, one with dechlorinator and one with untreated water left to sit for a few days.

I'll do the three tests and see whats up. It's been about 24 hours since the water change when I got the 7.4. I'll test the tank water right now and see what I got.
