Small hole in tail

My fish has a very small hole in his tail. It's about 1/4 inch in from the end of the tail. It was not there this morning at feed time. About 1 hour later it was there. Could this be from the filter intake? I have seen him occasionally get stuck. (I just bought the Fluval pre-filter sponge today to help with that)
Is there anything I can do to help healing, or will it just get better on its own?

It could be that he tore it agains the plastic plants since their tails are so very delicate. Basically the rule of thumb here is if you take panty hose and run it against the plant, if it snags then it will rip your betta's fins as well. If you can I would either get some real plants or silk ones would totally be fine as well. The filter might have done it as well if he has longer fins, a picture would be helpful here too :)

did 50% water change today with gravel vacuum, and i added a pre-filter sponge over the intake for the filter.
the hole is still there, but it is not gray at all.

Fin Rot

To me, this sounds like it could be fin rot. First try 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon and 100% water changes daily. Do this for a week..

I agree, I didn't know there was grey on his fins otherwise I would have pretty much said the same thing as jeremy here :)
He should be as good as new within a week! GL

Ah sorry I read your previous post wrong. Either way though, when it comes to fins and holes/rot/fraying I always put them in my 1 gallon QT, use 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt dissolved and change the water everyday.
