I have not tried them yet. I know they will turn the water brown that is to be expected. Think of how ponds look. The leaves smell like dried leaves. Maybe you should try the tea method. It gets the benefits out without leaving the leaf in to potential rot.

I just rinsed them as suggested and split a leaf in two and stuck in two tanks. My water change day is tomorrow so we will see if anything changes in short time.

I use a ton of IAL in my tanks and there are some leaves that will get sort of a clear, slimy film on them when you first put them in the tank.

It is perfectly normal and could be what was causing the water in your container to go cloudy and smelly.

Otherwise my IAL really only has an earthy smell when I remove it from the tank. I do have leaf litter in a few of my tanks that is pretty thick and this can smell slightly foul if I remove it. However, I think that is because I allow it to break down over time rather than change it out every couple of weeks.

I haven't done a lot of research on IAL yet and have never used it. This is one of the things are my to do list. How much IAL do you need for a tank?

Depends on how much of a tint you want to your water. I personally use a lot because my wild bettas like the water particularly dark, but one or two small leaves are usually enough for most splendens.

ok, thank you LBF. Like most things it depends on the fish than. Once I get some I will see who likes what and figure it out that way.

I am just trying to use it to help protect from disease. I am not noticing any color change to the water so far.
