Question What is on his scales?

Hi everyone, My crown tail betta has weird black marks on some of his scales.


Housing
What size is your tank? 1 gallon
What temperature is your tank? 78 degrees
Does your tank have a filter? no
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? has a strong heat lamp
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? N/A

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? Tetramin
How often do you feed your betta fish? 2 a day

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? weekly
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? All the water
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Conditioner

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? no



Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? Black under scales ever since I got him
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? No
When did you start noticing the symptoms? Only symptoms are black scales.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? N/A
Does your fish have any history of being ill? Yes, use to have fungus
How old is your fish (approximately)? Not sure, had for 5 months

no. He just has black specs on some of his scales. Is there a disease with that symptom?

Not really, it could just be his coloration. Sometimes their colors can change as they get older.

A picture would be really helpful....

Since he's in a 1 gal tank, I recommend that you increase your water changes. Doing one water change per week in a small tank isn't enough. The ammonia can build up and cause health problems.

I recommend doing at least one 100% and two 50% water changes per week. This will keep the ammonia and toxin levels low in his tank. And it will allow his immune system to work on healing the black spots (if they're a health related problem).

A lot of health problems can be cleared up simply by keeping the fish in warm, clean water!
