I collected some really neat little snail and crab shells from Laguna Beach, and I thought they would make a great addition the the sorority tank I am cycling for my girls. Their inhabitants are long gone but I don't want any microscopic critters to hurt anyone. Since they are porous, I don't want to risk them absorbing bleach.... so how do I make sure they are safe for the tank?
They will still cause fluctuations in the pH, monitor to make sure it doesn't go too high.. normally shells (even if boiled) are not recommended for freshwater tanks.
Your not supposed to boil rocks, the water inside could cause it to explode. Not sure if the same applies for shells but I wouldn't take the risk if I were you.
Thanks guys! I think ill just be better off without them afterall
