Exclamation Help...Bernie has a white fuzzy film!

Here's a picture of Bernie. He suddenly developed this white fuzzy film on his body, can barely float, gills open and close fine. I found him on the bottom of his fish tank this AM and thought he was dead. I removed him to the small plastic container he came in. My local fish store said to treat him with betafix. That's what I'm doing now...is this treatment the best thing for him?

Oh my this looks like what my fish had but way more severe I'm not positive tho. Stop using bettafix it has mixed reviews a lot of ppl say it can harm your fish. Use AQ salt to hold it at bay until you get proper medication. Ill look up a few things and let you know, for now give him 100% clean water no bettafix and if you have aquarium salt use that instead

since this has spread so rapidly so quickly im going to skip the conservative method all together... lower his tank temp to 76F this will help slow down spreading. Next go to the store and pick up a broad spectrum antibiotic (I used jungle fungas clear from walmart) alternative medications are API's Triple Sulfa, Maracyn Plus, or API Furan 2.
Treat as soon as you can because this is going to spread really fast (as i mentioned please use your AQ salt until you can get this medication)

ensure you have a good resting place for your betta so he wont have to struggle to get air, also during treatment add an air stone to your QT tank to help with breathing. If its filtered take it out this will filter out any medications you add to your tank, it will also absorb them which isnt ideal for future use.
Please pick up what you can as soon as you can, like I said this can spread very quickly. Let me know of any questions you have and ill be checking back for progress :)

He has a pretty severe case of what appears to be Columnaris, which is a bacterial infection. He needs treatment with a gram-negative antibiotic, and he needs it quickly!

I would treat with API Fuan 2, Maracyn Plus, or API Triple Sulfa. These are all available at Petsmart. If you cannot get one of these meds, get Jungle Fungus Clear from Walmart.

Do not add an airstone. The bacteria will thrive on the added oxygen.

I would stop the Bettafix. Its use with bettas is controversial, and Columnaris requires an antibiotic.

Once you get the antibiotic, if you have questions about how to use it, let us know.
