yes very thoroughly with lots of running water, could it have been some sort of fast acting fin rot? by the end his tail was kind of shrivelled (he is a crown tail) and his fins were sort of like bits of string they werent shredded but much much skinnier poor thing

yah, soap is like poison >> cuz if it started right after moving to the new tank... Did you wash any accessories or ornaments with soap aswell, just to add to my first question.

no no just water, maybe it was the water? im on tank water ive had it tested for heavy metals but maybe there was something else?? i dunno goldfish have lived very happily on that water but i suppose thats in a pond...

oh well... i dont think i will try another any time soon, could he have been sick when i bought him and just didnt show it till a few nights later.. i dont know

It could very well be that you got a sick fish. Sometimes it doesn't show up until you've had them for a few days.
