Shhh, don't tell him that. He does not need a bigger ego.

Fenghuang -- is that an apple snail with your betta? How do they get along?

I would sooo like to have one of those in one of my tanks. Also, where did you purchase it?

Yes. Well, technically, it's a golden mystery snail (Pomacea diffusa). Pet stores often use the label apple snails and mystery snails interchangeably. Mystery snails are one species of apple snail, but there are many species in that family and they are often sold as the same thing despite having different behaviors. I got golden mystery snails because they are supposed to be less destructive to live plants and I hadn't had any problems so far.

My bettas and snails get along great. I have one on each side of the divider and the boys completely ignore them. My late boy Vasuki picked at his snail when I first introduced it, but he stopped after a day. One snail is more active than the other and it's really interesting because he is constantly on the move, crawling on the plants, the tank walls, the divider... The other is lazy, but he doesn't hde in his shell all day either. They do produce quite a bit of waste, which is one downside, but the plants love them for it.

I bought them at Petland. They were a dollar-something each and come in different colours. They're not asexual, so you don't have to worry about them reproducing like crazy unless you get a male and a female together. They do get large though, so that is something you may have to think about.
