My New Tank

I just dug out our old fish tank that I am guessing is about 5 or eight gallons. It has a filter that is combined with a pump. The tank that is in use now is smaller. The problem is is that I don't know if I should use the filter/pump because it takes up room and I just purchased a Chinese algae eater and I didn't want it to starve. The tank in use now only has an air pump and a light. I can use the pump and light for the new tank. Please let me know what you think i should do.

Do you have pics of the tank and filter so I can see?
Algae eaters can live in a tank with a filter. Also, if you feel like he isn't getting enough algae, you can buy algae wafers to supplement it's diet.
