How dark? They can do ok in low light like normal room light, but all fish enjoy and do better in a bright light as if they were outside in normal.

Compact fluorescent are the way to go. You can get them are walmart, target, etc. I picked Zeus up a 10 watt that puts out the light of a 40 watt of natural daylight spectrum for $3 at target. My plant loves it too!

sure can! if you get alot of surface agitation get a piece of clear plastic and make a splash guard for the bulb.


They make the compact florescent in different types, The "daylight" spectrum is the best for our fish and plants. I have not found any "full spectrum" bulbs this small yet, which are needed for more delicate plant species.

My tanks aren't planted, so I guess that helps. I've notice target has some on clearance that I'll keep an eye on. Thanks!
